After two years away from the NFL, Aaron Donald is officially back.

The three-time Defensive Player of the Year is coming out of retirement to rejoin the Los Angeles Rams on a one-year, $20 million deal for the 2026 season.

Donald, 35, retired following the 2023 season after spending his entire career with Los Angeles. At the time, he walked away as one of the most dominant defensive players the league had ever seen, with three Defensive Player of the Year awards, eight First-Team All-Pro selections, 10 Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl championship.

Now, he is returning to a Rams team built to make another serious run.

A very different Rams defense

Donald will step back onto a Los Angeles defense that looks significantly different from the one he left behind.

The biggest addition is Myles Garrett, who joined the Rams this offseason after Los Angeles completed a blockbuster trade with Cleveland.

Pairing Donald and Garrett immediately gives the Rams one of the most intimidating defensive combinations in football.

Garrett is coming off another Defensive Player of the Year season, while Donald remains one of the most disruptive interior defenders the sport has ever seen.

Even after two years away, the possibility of those two lining up together is enough to change how opposing offenses prepare for Los Angeles.

The comeback had been building

Donald's return was not a last-minute decision.

The former Rams star had reportedly been training for months while considering whether he wanted to play again, putting himself through football-specific workouts to see how his body responded.

The Rams' acquisition of Garrett appears to have helped push the decision forward.

Donald acknowledged that the opportunity to join a loaded Los Angeles defensive front made the idea of returning more appealing.

He also made it clear that he would not be coming back if he did not believe he could still perform at a high level.

One more shot

Donald does not need another season to secure his legacy.

His résumé already places him among the greatest defensive players in NFL history, and he will eventually be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

This return feels more like an opportunity to make one final run with the only franchise he has ever played for.

The Rams enter the 2026 season as legitimate contenders, and adding Donald to a defense already featuring Garrett gives Los Angeles another major weapon as it tries to get back to the Super Bowl.

Two years after walking away, Aaron Donald is putting No. 99 back on.

And this time, he is returning to a Rams team that may be even more dangerous than the one he left.
