The 49ers–Rams rivalry has a new backdrop: the Melbourne Cricket Ground. San Francisco opens its season against Los Angeles in Australia’s first NFL regular-season game, and the spectacle comes with a matchup that deserves more attention than the flight itinerary.
Brock Purdy has to deal with a Rams defense that just added Myles Garrett. For a divisional opener, that is a fairly aggressive way to set the temperature.
The pass rush is the story
The 49ers’ own reporting on the Garrett trade makes clear that San Francisco’s offensive staff is treating his arrival as a serious problem. Offensive coordinator Chris Foerster has been studying the film. The teams meet again in Week 14 at Levi’s Stadium, so whatever the opening matchup reveals will have a second act.
For this first meeting, watch the space around Purdy as much as the ball. Can San Francisco give a developing route enough time to become an explosive play? Does pressure force the offense into quicker decisions? The interesting part is how the 49ers answer, possession by possession. A long completion matters; the protection that made it possible can explain even more.
Mike Evans gives that passing game another reason to hold your attention. Put him alongside the familiar names of Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle, and there is plenty for Los Angeles to account for, too. This is the appeal of a strong divisional matchup: the threat goes both ways.
A stadium-sized introduction
The MCG gives the broadcast an occasion that a routine Week 1 setting cannot. There will be viewers arriving for the international event and staying for the rivalry. That is a good situation for a game whose stakes are already clear: two NFC West opponents trying to make the other start behind.
The Jonas Brothers are scheduled for halftime, according to Netflix’s game guide. The football has enough star power to carry its own half of the bill. The real test of the night is whether the action makes the destination feel like a bonus.
When to watch
Kickoff is Thursday, September 10 at 8:35 p.m. ET / 5:35 p.m. PT in the United States—Friday morning in Melbourne. Netflix carries the game, included with its plans without a separate pay-per-view charge. The 49ers’ game-day page has the matchup hub.
Come for the MCG setting. Stay for the first time Purdy gets a clean pocket—or has to create something without one.
