New Balance doesn’t update the 990 often, so a new one matters. The Made in USA 990v7 releases November 6, 2026. The grey launch pair, style U990GR7, is listed at $200 at U.S. retailer DTLR, which is carrying it in men’s and grade-school sizes.

What stayed

This is still recognizably a 990, which is the whole assignment. The grey is back, along with the pigskin suede and mesh upper and the N logo on the side. New Balance’s creative design manager, Jean Khalife, frames the shoe in those terms on the brand’s product page, describing the 990 as a long-running commitment to quality and craftsmanship.

The line goes back to 1982, when New Balance says the original hit shelves in an understated grey with a then-unheard-of three-figure price tag. More than four decades later, a Made in USA runner at $200 still isn’t cheap, but it’s easier to explain than most things at that number.

What changed

The upper picks up tumbled leather accents and synthetic suede sway bars, giving it a more streamlined look. Cream laces and matching midsole accents soften the grey.

Underfoot, the 990v7 uses a dual-density, full-length FuelCell midsole for cushioning and energy return, with ENCAP and a heel device handling stability. That mix is the point of the shoe: modern foam for comfort, and the older support technology that gave the 990 its reputation.

New Balance’s label comes with a specific definition. The brand says its Made in USA footwear contains a domestic value of 70% or more. That’s not the same as 100%, and New Balance says so plainly.

Our take

The 990 has survived every trend cycle by refusing to chase any of them, and the v7 keeps to that plan. Grey suede and a clear price make this an easy one to wear on day one. The real test comes with the colorways and collaborations that tend to follow a new 990, but the launch pair is the version most people will actually buy.
