LEGO Technic’s newest hypercar doesn’t just open its doors. It pulls off the Koenigsegg party trick. The Koenigsegg Sadair’s Spear (42232) is 4,104 pieces of 1:8 scale megacar, and its signature move, Ghost Mode, comes straight from the real thing.

The set

42232 is $449.99, 18+, and finishes at 23 inches long, 11 inches wide and 6 inches high. It went on sale July 4 after a LEGO Insiders early-access window from July 1. It’s the sixth car in LEGO’s Technic Ultimate series, the line that started in 2016 and drops a new 1:8 car roughly every other year.

Ghost Mode

Lift the rear clam and the whole car comes alive in one movement: the clam rises, the dihedral synchro-helix doors rotate open, the front hood lifts and the mirrors fold. It’s the most theatrical mechanism LEGO has put in a Technic car, and it’s the reason to buy this over anything else on the shelf.

Underneath, there’s a 9-speed sequential transmission with a rotating gear indicator, Triplex suspension front and rear, a V8 with moving pistons, working steering and a removable roof. LEGO says Ghost Mode, the 9-speed and Triplex suspension are all firsts for a Technic Ultimate car.

The life-size one that actually drives

To launch it, LEGO and Koenigsegg built a full-size Sadair’s Spear out of 327,906 LEGO elements. It took more than 9,400 hours to design and build, weighs about 1,800 kg, and Koenigsegg test driver Markus Lundh drove it up the Goodwood hill in reverse at 111 km/h. That makes it the fastest drivable LEGO car ever made, more than double the old record.

Our take

Same price as the McLaren P1, more pieces and a better party trick. The P1 is the prettier display piece, but if you want the build that makes people stop and watch, this is the one.
