Earbuds are an everyday purchase disguised as a spec comparison. The useful questions tend to show up later: can you change the volume without digging out your phone, will they last through your trip, and do you actually like wearing them?
Apple announced AirPods 5 on September 9 in two U.S. configurations: $129 with a USB-C charging case, or $149 with a Wireless Charging Case. Both include active noise cancellation in an open-ear design. Pre-orders opened September 9, with store availability beginning September 18. Source: Apple’s AirPods 5 announcement.
What the extra $20 buys
The distinction goes beyond the case. The $149 version includes on-stem volume swipes. Its case supports USB-C, Qi and Apple Watch charging, plus a speaker for Find My. The base case charges over USB-C. Source: AirPods 5 specifications.
Apple’s ANC-on battery ratings are up to four hours per charge for the base version and five for the $149 version. With case recharges included, the figures become up to 20 and 22 hours. Those totals are not continuous listening time; the earbuds have to go back into the case. Source: Apple’s battery specifications.
Our take: if you often adjust volume while carrying bags or standing on a train, the physical control is the most persuasive reason to consider the upgrade. If you already charge everything by cable and listen in shorter stretches, the base version deserves a place on your shortlist.
Do the comparison against your longest usual listening session. A larger case total will not solve the same problem as longer endurance between charges. It is easy to buy the wrong answer when both numbers appear beside the word “battery.”
Treat the noise-cancelling claim as a claim
Apple says the new ANC removes up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. We have not measured that improvement, and it does not establish how these compare with every other earbud—or how they will fit your ears. Source: Apple’s stated ANC comparison.
Before deciding, make a short listening checklist: the music you know well, speech at a comfortable volume, and the background noise you encounter most. Check comfort while talking and moving, too. A favorable specification cannot tell you whether you will want to keep a particular pair in your ears.
Check the phone before buying for AI
Apple attaches device, software, language and regional requirements to Live Translation and Siri AI. Translation needs compatible hardware and software with Apple Intelligence enabled; Siri AI is launching in beta. Check the relevant requirements before buying for either feature. For this purchase, our priority order would be fit, listening time, controls, then additional software features. If your current earbuds still satisfy those first three, this announcement alone does not create a need to replace them.
The $129 model makes the entry decision interesting. The $149 model makes the daily-use decision more interesting. Which one belongs in your pocket depends on the inconvenience you want to remove.
HYPE’s earlier event preview discussed a possible ANC split. Apple’s announcement settles it: both AirPods 5 versions have ANC.
